It’s not often the phrase “Infinitely extendable” can be used in relation to a plugin, but we’re confident that we can make that claim here, and are even happy to add the phrase “without touching the core plugin code”.

We have added hooks, actions and filters liberally throughout the system. Everywhere we thought they could be useful to enable any competent developer to be able to enhance or completely change parts of the plugins functionality and flow.

On top of that, the core code of the plugin is based on a OOP model with a group of core classes for subscriptions, levels, members, rules and gateways that can be extended or overridden to add-in or even remove functionality you don’t want.

Need a new payment gateway? Extend the gateway class and override a couple of the methods to handle the gateways API and you have it.

Add-ons

Simply place your code in the membership plugins own plugins directory and it will automatically be loaded and run when the membership plugin is initiated.

To give you an example of what can be done with a membership add-on, the Membership dashboards news panel is a completely separate membership add-on – developed specifically as an example of what can be done.

Sometimes your content is so informative, that members of your site will bookmark it or tweet links to it. However, not everyone is a member of your site so they may not be able to read it.

This is were your No Access page comes in, as well as informing the visitor that they are trying to access some content that is for members only – it gives you the chance to sell the benefits of membership to your site.

Excellent, but is it hard to set up? No, it’s just another page in your WordPress site – create your content and then tell the membership plugin which page to use and it will be hidden away until needed.

Getting people to trust your site and sign-up for access to your content can be hard – so why not offer them as much flexibility as possible?

The subscriptions interface within the membership plugin is incredibly flexible and you can quickly and easily set up free trials with ongoing subscriptions after a set period of time:

Don’t think that they’ll sign up for a yearly subscription? Then why not offer a monthly version as well?

Both of the above subscriptions start with a free 7 day period before starting to charge the member on a recurring basis. If you’re not interested in a recurring income, and would rather just charge a flat fee for unlimited access after your trial period – you can do that too:

Switch the mode to indefinite and the period will be ignored and you user will stay on that level for ever.

In the example posts on this site (a lot borrowed from wpmu.org) we are trying to show the types of protection that you can easily incorporate into your site.

Whilst it’s obvious from a number of the posts that we can protect content within a post by wrapping them in an unlimited number custom created shortcodes, and / or protect all content that is placed after the More tag – we can also protect images and downloads.

In fact, if you can upload it to WordPress, then you can protect it. The image below is available to everyone on the site:

However, this next one we’ve added to the download group called members (you can create an unlimited number of custom download groups in the plugin and assign different content to, and protect in each one). You can also replace the no-access image used by the plugin – and guess what, the image used can be chosen based on the WordPress language locale….

One of the useful rules in the Membership plugin is restricting the “conversation” on your site to Members only. There are two options for comment protection in the Membership plugin -

• the option we have here, which disables the comment form and hides all the already entered comments.
• or you can disable the form, but allow non-members to read existing comments.

Either can be enabled by simply dragging the Comments rule in to the negative part of the membership level for strangers (a stranger is a visitor to your site who is either not logged in, or doesn’t have an active membership).

A customized WordPress login is a nice touch to any site, especially if you’re making it for someone other than yourself. There should be no need to install a plugin to do this for you. In order to keep your site lean, you’ll want to avoid adding loads of plugins that do little things like this.

One of the most frequently asked questions for new WordPress users is how to remove the “Powered by WordPress” link. Of course, it’s a nice thing to do to leave it in there, but WordPress is licensed under the GPL, so there’s no need to worry if you want to remove it. Perhaps you don’t want to advertise to the world that your site runs on WordPress. Here are two easy ways to remove that from your site’s footer:

Option 1: Remove it Using CSS

Method one is perhaps the simplest way. Go to your dashboard and find Appearance >> Editor and then select your style.css file. Paste this in there and you’re good to go:

Option 2: Remove it from footer.php

In your WordPress dashboard go to Appearance >> Editor and remove the section that looks like this:
